The FDA has issued a warning to all Americans to avoid selling, serving, or consuming Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Frozen Supplemental Shakes, manufactured by Prairie Farms Dairy Inc. The agency is currently investigating a Listeria monocytogenes outbreak linked to these frozen supplements. So far, 38 people have died across the country, and more deaths are expected. These products are commonly distributed in hospitals and long-term care facilities.
Symptoms of Listeria infection typically appear within two weeks of consuming contaminated food but can develop anywhere from the same day to 10 weeks later according to the FDA. Symptoms range from mild fever, muscle aches, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, and diarrhea to more severe complications, including headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.
